Estate Planning Isn’t Just For The Elderly

Preparing For Your Estate Plan Meeting

The more prepared you are for your appointment to go over and discuss your estate plan, the more efficient and productive the meeting will be. At Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano, LLP, in White Plains, our wealth management and estate planning attorneys have over 100 years of combined experience customizing estate plans and crafting unique estate planning strategies designed to minimize estate tax consequences for clients throughout Westchester County and New York.

Background And Family Information

The more we know about you, your family and your background, the more comprehensive our legal strategy for your estate plan can be. If you have a young family that includes minor children, be prepared to talk about who you would like to designate as their guardians. Also, be prepared to talk about who you would like to designate for any advance directives and powers of attorney. Think about who you would like to make decisions – medical and financial – for you on your behalf should you not be able to make decisions for yourself.

Financial Data And Asset Information

The more you can gather together before your appointment, the better and the less you will have to think about later. Any of the following documentation will be helpful:

  • Real estate and property information
  • Financial summaries, including balance information for bank accounts, 401k, IRA, etc.
  • Stock certificates
  • Life insurance policies

If you already have an estate plan, bring copies of any existing estate plan documents. If you own your own business, we will also need to see any business agreements that you have or contracts that reflect your ownership or partnership interests. If you are divorced or have a prenuptial agreement, we will also need to see those documents to make sure that your estate plan is in compliance with any agreements you have made regarding your assets.
