How should I apply for Medicaid in New York?

On Behalf of | Dec 26, 2024 | Medicaid Planning

Seeking financial support for long-term health care can leave you feeling overwhelmed or unsure about where to start. Many people face the same uncertainty, wondering how to access the necessary benefits.

In New York, there are several ways to apply for Medicaid. Some get in through New York State of Health, while others try through their Local Department of Social Services Office (LDSS). Read on to know which option is right for you.

Applying through NY State of Health

NY State of Health uses Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) rules, similar to the guidelines that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses, with a few differences. This means you should gather all your income information to help accurately assess your eligibility.

You must determine if you fall into one of the MAGI eligibility groups. These groups include:

  • Adults aged 19 to 64 who do not qualify for Medicare
  • Children between the ages of one and 18
  • Infants under the age of one
  • Pregnant women
  • Parents and caretaker relatives of any age who may be eligible for Medicare

You can begin the application process once you have identified your eligibility group. Visit the insurance marketplace’s website, where you can create an account or log in if you already have one.

The website will guide you through the process, asking for information about your household, income and other relevant details. If you get approval, you can select a health plan that fits your needs.

Applying through LDSS

People who are part of non-MAGI eligibility groups can apply for Medicaid through their LDSS. These groups include:

  • Individuals who are blind or disabled and do not fit into the MAGI eligibility categories
  • Individuals aged 65 and older who are not parents or caretaker relatives
  • People living in residential care centers

Applying for Medicaid can seem daunting, but knowing where to apply based on your eligibility group can make the process more manageable. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey, and resources are available to help you every step of the way.
